‘Abomination' Vase - Amber
Melbourne-based design studio Thomas Maxam's created a line of handmade borosilicate glass bud vases. ‘We wanted to celebrate the ugly side of creation,’ says Thomas Cohen and Maxam Whiteley of their new design, which they have appropriately named ‘Abomination’.
Each vase is made from a single glass tube, which is manipulated using lamp working techniques. Once heated, the tube is twisted and crumpled at the bottom, allowing it to stay upright without any structural reinforcement at the base. On first glance, the vases resemble crinkled coloured cellophane.
Founded at the beginning of 2019, Thomas Maxam is an industrial design company focused on new production techniques, local manufacturing and longlasting interior products. All the ‘Abomination’ vases are made by hand in the brand’s studio, located in the North West of Melbourne. Owing to the handmade process, all the vases are different. But the imperfections are what makes them beautiful!
